| Texas Wine Country Lodging | | Comfort TX a destination all its own offers you antique shopping, German heritage, great food, Guadalupe river, and small town hospitality. As you walk down town take notice of bricks in the sidewalk engraved with names of the founding families. History lives on as you stroll the streets of comfort and read the memorial on High Street dedicated to the free thinkers who settled in the area in the mid 19th century or visit the "Treue der Union" monument: Dedicated in 1866, this is the only monument to the Union cause south of the Mason Dixon line and one of only six sites in the nation which may fly the American flag at half mast in perpetuity. It marks the final resting place of men from Comfort and the surrounding area killed in the "Battle of the Nueces" in 1862. Opposed to slavery and secession, the German settlers of the area suffered greatly during the Civil War. Attempting to leave the state, the group was surprised and killed by Confederate raiders and their bodies recovered after the war ended.
